About
Dr Juha Tuunainen works as a research co-ordinator at the Helsinki Institute of Science and Technology Studies (HIST). HIST is a network unit established by two prominent Finnish universities, the University of Helsinki and Aalto University to strengthen research and graduate education in the field of science and technology studies (STS).
Dr. Tuunainen’s current research focuses on social studies of science, technology and innovation. His research topics include, for instance:
* science and technology policy,
* innovation processes and networks in biotechnology,
* university organization,
* links between university researchers and other societal stakeholders, and
* commercialization of research results.
Tuunainen’s research approach has been predominantly ethnographic applying theoretical and conceptual ideas derived from such sociological traditions as symbolic interactionism, constructivism and ethnomethodology.
His work has close connections with several other disciplines, including organization research, business economics, adult education and history of science.
Tuunainen has published his work in major international journals in science, technology and innovation studies as well as in higher education research.
Before starting his research career in the mid-1990s, Tuunainen participated for five years in higher education policy and university administration holding various positions in the Ministry of Education, the University of Helsinki and the National Union of University Students in Finland.
