About

I am coordinator for European Research Network (RN) 19, Sociology of Professions. If you already are or wish to be a part of this network, please go to 'research interests' >sociology of professions > ESA RN 19
The general interest 'sociology of professions' is intended for anyone interested in this field.

I do research on professions, health care and globalization from the perspective of social inequality. Key topics include professionalism, the welfare state and migration. I have a keen interest in qualitative research methodologies and historical and internationally comparative approaches in particular.
My ongoing research concerns the position of migrant care workers in Finnish society. I examine this issue from the perspective of the cultural change caused by neoliberal reforms of the public sector. The associated neomanagerialism underpins a discourse of flexibility and efficiency that frames both the provision of care services and the position of care workers. The migrant care worker is the ideal care worker for the new discourse, as it employs the Western discourse of professionalism that posits non-Western care workers as non-professional, but flexible and culturally apt for 'lower-skill' care work.
